During the revolt of the Naibs, Duncan Idaho killed Javid publicly, both as revenge and in an attempt to force Stilgar's hand. This provoked the Fremen Naib Stilgar to abandon his position of neutrality between Alia and the rebel Fremen by killing Duncan Idaho in turn.

"Mr. Pain," the CIA operative at the camp, tortured Javid in an attempt to gain information about the Soviets and the mujahadeen resistance. Javid denied having any knowledge of the war, but was continually tortured for information. Dr. Mallard, who at the time had volunteered to work as a doctor at the refugee camps, managed to heal him and other tortured refugees. The torture regime only continued, leading to infection of his wounds. Dr. Mallard, wanting to end Javid's suffering, overdosed his morphine drip. His sister discovered her brother and knew Dr. Mallard was to blame. Years later, she attacked Dr. Mallard in revenge for her brother's death. Unbeknownst to both Dr. Mallard and Mosuma, the CIA operative already knew that Javid had no information but continued to torture him and other refugees in an attempt to break Dr. Mallard down and force him to leave. The torturer believed that the other patients were withholding information because they knew Dr. Mallard, the camp doctor, would save them from death. With Dr. Mallard's departure shortly after Javid's death, the remaining refugees lost hope and revealed what they knew about the war to the CIA. Dr. Mallard was devastated to learn the truth from "Mr. Pain," realizing that if he had left the camp Javid would no longer be tortured and would not need to be mercy killed.
