abstract
  • The United States of Britain Presidential Election, 1980 was held on November 4th, 1980 to elect the next President of the USB. The contest was between incumbent Democratic President James Callaghan, and Republican challenger Margaret Thatcher. Callaghan's term was hampered by the series of industrial disputes and strikes during the Winter of 1978-79, known as the Winter of Discontent. He focused his campaign on support for the National Health Service and full employment. Thatcher's campaign employed the advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi and pledged to control inflation as well as curbing the power of the trade unions.
