Life was always hard in the Gothic-like harshness of Imperial Center's environment. But for ten year old Kira going to her own father's funeral was of no aid. Her mother quickly formed a drinking habit, and the apartment complex their family managed fell into decay. It was Kira's brother Desmin alone which often rescued the family business from death. Not only this, but Desmin became a form of temporary father to Kira, taking that place to hold the family together in its time of need.

Her mother, a strong supporter of the Empire- who grew fat from credits by owning her own business, remarried a washed out Imperial Army Soldier in 2 ABY- creating a rift between Kira and her mother even further. According to Kira, her stepfather wasn't harsh, but cared little beyond credits- and saw Kira's mother's decaying business as a cash cow to be milked. In reality, this may not have been the case.
