DVD is a commonly used abbreviation of Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc. Introduced in the late 1990s, and posessing vastly increased capacity over standard CDs and video-discs, DVDs quickly replaced the video cassette as the dominant format for home entertainment. Most commercial DVDs are encoded with a 'region lock' that restrict their use outside of specific geographical areas (usually their area of manufacture). Discs encoded for Region 1, for example, will usually not function in DVD players sold in another region.
