After collecting spray cans from various places in the level, the player can then 'tag' a particular spot by using the L button when they draw near or skate past. After the first few tags, the police show up, usually led by Captain Onishima. As the player covers more and more of the landscape in his or her gang's graffiti, the police presence escalates further and further, often ending in tanks or rocket-firing helicopters charging onto the scene.
