Starting 34th in the field, Lawler lost his engine before he was even able to complete one lap and finished last (35th). Lawler's final two races came in 2003, and not surprisingly both came at Texas. Lawler struggled in the June event, starting last (36th) and finishing 31st after early suspension issues. But Lawler got his break when Billy Ballew Motorsports tapped him to drive in the October race, finishing a career-best 18th.
