At first, these pirates, lead by Captain Jack Sparrow, were just regular pirates serving on the Black Pearl, pillaging, raiding and looting. However, when Sparrow and his crew rescued Cole Kroger and his new fiancée, Nicole Triton, Cole's diplomacy convinced the pirates to join the Galactic Confederate Systems against the Empire. The pirates were commissioned as privateers, having received their Letter of Marque from the Commander-in-Chief.

The pirates committed many raids against Imperial military starships and Imperial military bases. They even hijacked Imperial Star Destroyers and civilian ships, making demands of the release of Confederates and pirates alike, political asylum from the Empire or ransom in exchange for the ships and Imperial crews and Imperial civilians. In an effort to distract the Empire while the Confederate military rescued their president, the PotC hijacked Bastion Flight 107, while also taking a chance to condemn the Empire on the HoloNet.
