Prior to his pro career, Powis played college hockey at the University of Denver. He was selected 68th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. After leaving the University in 1970, Powis played one season for the Denver Spurs and then joined the Nova Scotia Voyageurs where the team won the Calder Cup in 1971-72. Powis finally got some NHL time with Chicago in 1973-74. The Kansas City Scouts claimed him in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft and he played one season for them. All together, Powis played in 130 NHL games, scoring 19 goals and 33 assists.
