| - So Rome’s greatest generals were called back to the capital from their distant garrison posts to plan the invasion (now that major expansion in Eurasia had ended, they were not as critical in maintaining peace). This became Hadrianus Emineo in 1748(995), an incredibly well organized plan that would take the better part of many of the general’s remaining lives to perfect. In 1751(998) a Britannica Superior ADA developed the first mass produced tooth brushes, now both chemical and physical cleaning of the teeth was easier, as toothpaste had been used as more of a mouthwash until then. By the next decade they would become common in middle-class homes and above. In 1753(1000) Italian musicians independently created the Vissalo, a small stringed, wooden instrument with a horsehair bow running over the 5 strings, notes changed by finger position on the vissalo’s neck. Also, Sinica invented paper currency. It made money more cheap to make and easier to transport, in a few years, the first Roman Augusti papers were legally printed. Initially these were predominantly used by government loan firms and banks (Procuratonis), storing money at a cost with slight interest rates for the treasury and few public implications. Eventually the paper notes denoting value were called 'Procurapapayros (banknotes, later called procura) and the government over time hired several privately owned, self advertising banks to continue printing them at predetermined quotas. The public at large would start using notes within a few more decades and it would be very popular. This would lead to the revamping of the imperial currency in 1775(1022) as follows: (paper) 2 Carici = 1 Constanni 2 Constanni= 1 Caesari 2 Caesari and 1 Constanni = 1 Augusti (transition)2 Duplexi and 1 Cunctusa = 1 Carici (coin) 2 Cunctusa = 1 Duplexi 4 Quadrantis = 1 Cunctusa 2 Deci and 1 Vicensi = 1 Quadrantis 2 Vicensi = 1 Deci 5 Atomi = 1 Vicensi Although it was not really known to anyone, lions and tigers had become endangered after renewed interest in their poaching and arena matches following the Asia/Africa reclamation. 1756(1003) in Syria an independent inventor named Aban Vegetius Renatus developed a torque and speed transmitting device which could smoothly shift between an infinite number of transmission ratios by adjusting the distances between the conical shaped pulleys that the belt rode on. Called a Vegitia, the device proved practical only for low powered and low torque applications with current materials. 1773(1020) in Rome the first Futura Egi was sanctioned by the Senate. It was a financial establishment where businessmen exchanged and negotiated the future sale and purchase of commodities. For many years however, it remained tightly regulated in an attempt to avoid pricing bubbles. By 1776(1023) the relevant military forces were briefed on Project Hadrian. Extensive spying and strategic bribes and whatnot were in place, the weakest areas were mapped, all the Legionaries were organized. Out of Rome’s 1000 Legions, totalling 1 000 000 and its 350 000 Auxilia, 102 000 troops (66 legions with auxilia) were spared for the campaign, divided into 3 uneven forces, one landed at mid Calusa, another in Nova Scandia, and the last navigated around the Tainocai islands (the largely native population had reverted back to their pre-contact lifestyles) undetected, then travelled up to the provincial capital of Otacilium(its name had not been changed) on the River Luteus. Once the three had made their landings and secured footholds, they unloaded their canna and assembled the bombus alesalitis. Despite the enormity of the fleets involved, the surprise attacks were reasonably successful. All was going well until, the Terranovans began producing what they called Pilumii, although they were not the spears legionaries would habitually connect the name to. These were like canna, but small enough for one person to carry, fire, and reload, though they were so long they required a forked rest to sit on. A bundle of niter sat behind ball bearings in the weapon’s long iron tube, a smoldering length of rope on a lock ignited the niter and projected the bearings. Alone these weapons proved inaccurate and inconsistent enough for them to be considered harmless, but in time hundreds of the Commonwealth's militias began lining up in multiple rows, firing at a pace fast enough that their inaccuracy became diminutive. Many legionaries were lost needlessly but it is only a bad plan that cannot be changed. Combination attacks by alesalitis and rockets, especially effective if in an ambush position near a supply waggon, decimated many Novan positions. Despite these persevering Imperial attacks, in 1780(1027) the Novan navy began defeating the Imperial Quintremes and their supporting Triremes with outright numbers, though they could not out speed them. late 1770's(1025+) Emergence of the Kipchak Cilaf. They conquered the Pogurez, and would not be dissuaded from making invasions of the Empire in 1782, putting stress on Rome to end the war in Terranova. 1783(1030) working off of captured Novan conceptual designs found in 1777(1023) in a Calusan inventor's barn, the first Vaporemes were constructed in occupied ports and came into regular use in Terranova by 1788(1035). There had always been fears that a vapos engine on a ship would be too prone to fire, but the ships ability to sail upstream without oarsman or sails would give the invasion a much needed boost as the Novans were starting to construct their own as well already. Fully Iron hulls for these ships came about by 1798(1045) but it would be almost 100 years before the Imperial Navy made Iron ships the standard. Although a slow process, the switch to iron hulls would be a factor saving Rome from falling behind the Commonwealth and Nihonia in sea power. Some Legions, especially in the north, had to forage and fell behind schedule for expansion. When the winter came, desertion and starvation had become a real problem. Although Rome was winning on the whole, the Novans still didn’t break, they just kept falling back deeper into their own expanded dominions where they regrouped and never seemed to run out of niter and weapons. 1786(1033) The province of Abenacia to the east of Nova Scandia was added, carved from the Commonwealth. In November it was discovered that a number of private banks were funding the Commonwealth in its war against Rome as well as belligerent border tribes in the Old World. The busting open of this led also to subsequent discoveries of private banks funding other entities the government did not approve of. Outraged by the conspiracy, the Senate severely restricted private banks, but their reactions to the new laws eventually led to the complete banning of them, with the government buying out, foreclosing, or rescinding their operating licences and charging their owners with various forms of treason. Eventually a stalemate was struck in the vast central plains and the sides were forced to meet for negotiations in Sextilus 1797(1044). The provinces of Scanata, Calusa, Lacota, Tainocai, and Nova Scandia were back. The Novans had an air of superiority all the time that really grated on legionaries’ nerves. A huge problem the conquered Novans were causing was their abolition of slavery and a ‘parliament’ of direct, all-out democracy for the sovereign nations of their commonwealth. Sure, the Senate had a limited form of democracy, but to allow a nation’s leader to be picked by masses less educated than those who went to primary schools was seen as a terrible idea and it was said to have contributed to their ‘defeat’. News of Novan abolition of slavery unfortunately swept the Roman world and caused a lot of problems. So much in fact, that fractures in national unity over the whole idea of slavery would form, even so high as the Senate, the 3 Praetorian branches also had trouble, trials became common since it was so difficult to tell whether a traitor was defined as proslavery or abolitionist in the mind of the judge. Maybe it would have been better to find ways of getting by fine without slavery. The official position of the Senate had been slowly learning toward the removal of slavery ever since the Miasmata almost 200 years ago made slaves so expensive, hiring freeman citizens to do the jobs were almost as cheap. Not only that, but the educated middle classes began asking their senators for a more democratic government. Few noble families suggested such a thing so little would be done for another 400 years, but some governing system advances developed by the Commonwealth found application in the Empire. Cremation was unbanned and would make a moderate comeback over the next few decades. In 1799(1046) the peace was reached, at least Rome had driven the Novans completely away from the Atlanticus and the Racemi Maiorai (the cluster of lakes nearing the centre of the continent). Image:Empire 1799(1046).png It was now the end of Alexandros Quinctius' 2nd year as emperor and Terranova was not as cheap to keep as it had been the first time. Not only that, but it was discovered how the Novans got their hands on such efficient firearms; the Nihonians had been shipping the weapons to them just a couple weeks before the campaign had began. This made relations very tense, and between Nihhon, Rome, and Sinica, a large war is bound to occur.
