- "Survivor's Guilt" is the 895th episode of Casualty and the 28th episode of the 28th series. It was preceded by "The Last Chance Saloon" and was followed by "Gravity". The episode was directed by Paul Murphy and written by Kevin Rundle. In addition, the episode acted as the first of a two parter due to the fact the events of the next episode start directly where this episode left off.
- New partner Sam Casey joins a grieving Ronnie to find out who shot Matt dead. Sam suspects an accomplice of the recently convicted Mark Ellis but the trail ultimately leads to Jamaal Clarkson, a youngster whose brother Kieran was murdered in 2003, though the police closed the case as a suicide. Jamaal believes they were not interested as Kieran was black and tells Ronnie he knows Ellis was the murderer. It was his intention to kill Ellis but, on discovering that he had been sentenced, shot Matt instead as an act of revenge against the apathetic police. While Alesha and Jake prepare a case of murder against Jamaal, Doug Greer, his barrister, argues that the boy is himself a victim, whose crime was motivated by desperation, not calculation.

| - Survivor's guilt was the psychological condition resulting in the feeling that a person had done wrong by surviving traumatic events, such as combat or disaster. The effect of survivor's guilt depended on the individual person’s own psychology. Apparent sufferers included Bernice Summerfield (PROSE: Love and War) and the Ninth, (TV: Dalek) Tenth (TV: Gridlock) and Eleventh Doctors. (TV: The Time of the Doctor) Ironically, the Eighth Doctor had insisted he was psychologically incapable of such a thing after Marnal insisted he had survivor's guilt due to the Time Lords being wiped out during the Second War in Heaven. (PROSE: The Gallifrey Chronicles) The Doctor himself began to move on from his feelings of guilt as he kept regenerating, but the psychological scarring of what he remembered doing to end the Last Great Time War still dwelt within him.
