No se conoce mucho acerca de Chill excepto que era un ratero menor que mató a Thomas y Martha Wayne cuando trataba de robarles el dinero y las joyas. Chill entró en pánico y huyó cuando Bruce empezó a llorar y pedir ayuda, no sin que antes el niño memorizara las facciones de su rostro.

- One fateful night, Joe Chill decided to rob rich people. After Bruce and his parents saw The Mark of Zorro, they were cornered in an alley by Chill threatening them with a gun and demanding that they hand their valuables over. A scuffle ensued and culminated with Chill shooting and killing the eight year old's parents. Witnessing the whole ordeal, Bruce took it upon himself to wage personal war on crime as the masked vigilante Batman.
