Deadheads were logs being floated in Masset Inlet to sawmills like the one in Port Clements and were lost. They became waterlogged and floated just below the surface of the Inlet. For no reason anyone could determine, they would sometimes bob to the surface and potentially hole any unwary boat. During Colonel Thomas Bushell's crossing of the Inlet from Port Clements to Buckley Bay on HMS Grampus, he observed a couple of crewmen standing watch at the bow looking out for deadheads.
