| - Written by: Sara B. Cooper Directed by: Steven A. Adelson PREVIOUSLY ON SANCTUARY... From Edward: HELEN This isn't a disease, Henry. HENRY I have spent my adult life working with abnormals, but now I am one. Clip from Revelations and Audio from Edward: HENRY Look, I can't account for myself when I'm that thing, and what if I hurt one of you? From Edward: HENRY The difference between you and me is you can control your power. BIGFOOT And in time, so will you. From Revelations Part 2 HENRY Awesome! EXT WAREHOUSE PARKING LOT [A woman is walking across parking lot while she is talking on the phone.] WOMAN You are such a dork. You said "No problem, I'll take over the feedings while you're gone" and then you crap out on me before I even leave. INT SANCTUARY HENRY’S ARRAY [Henry is working in his lab with the phone on intercom.] HENRY I know, but hey, secure networks tank and I'm the go-to guy. What am I going to do? WOMAN Yeah, last time I ask you for a favor. HENRY Okay, look, I can still swing by there after I'm done. It'll be like 30, 40 minutes tops. WOMAN Oh, 40 minutes Henry Foss time? Jack will die of hunger by then. Come on, you know he's our baby. HENRY Oh... Man that is cold. WOMAN I'm just saying. HENRY Go catch your flight, all right? Don't want to miss your romantic getaway. WOMAN Oh, Henry... HENRY If you can call a biochemistry conference in beautiful downtown Blackpool romantic. [The woman goes up to a door and uses a pass card and the door unlocks.] WOMAN Yeah, well, you got to admit; at least he's making an effort. INT SANCTUARY HENRY’S ARRAY [Viewers are only given Henry’s point of view in the rest of this scene.] HENRY All right, you're right, my bad. WOMAN Besides, I'm already at the lab. HENRY Okay, you know what? Just go, have a good time and don't worry about Jack. I'll make sure he's... WOMAN Oh, my God, Jack? No. HENRY Rachel, what's going on? RACHEL Wait Jack; stay there. HENRY Rachel! RACHEL Its okay, I can help you. I can help you.. HENRY Damn it. RACHEL Jack! No! HENRY Rachel? INT WAREHOUSE [A cell phone with Henry’s picture on it is lying on ground surrounded by blood and glass.] RACHEL Henry... help me. HENRY Rachel, what's going on? CREDITS INT WAREHOUSE [Henry bursts through the door with gun drawn followed by Kate and Will.] HENRY Rachel! Oh, God... [The team sees the destruction and searches for Rachel. Henry has moved into another room.] WILL Henry! [Will spots Rachel lying on the ground and moves over to check on her.] KATE It's on the run! [Kate has found a window broken out.] WILL Load tranqs! HENRY Oh, my God... You go after Jack. I got her. [Henry has come over to kneel on the other side of Rachel.] WILL Yeah? HENRY Yeah. WILL All right, here. [Will hands Henry a bag and runs to the door with Kate close behind him.] WILL Come on. [Henry puts on gloves and then checks for a pulse.] HENRY Just hang on. Oh, thank God. Rachel? Rachel... [Rachel becomes conscious and panicky.] HENRY It's okay. RACHEL No. Henry... [Henry grasps her hand.] HENRY It's okay. RACHEL The blood! The blood... [Rachel motions to her wounds on her abdomen. Henry looks and Rachel begins to lose consciousness.] HENRY No, no, no, hang on, stay with me. Stay with me! HELEN’S VOICE ON PHONE Henry? HENRY Hey, doc? HELEN [ON PHONE] Calm down. HENRY It's Rachel. ALTERNATES BETWEEN INT SANCTUARY AND INT WAREHOUSE HELEN Is she... HENRY She's alive, but she's unconscious, and she's been cut. HELEN Are you gloved up? HENRY Yeah. Where's the big guy? HELEN He's on his way with a haz-mat transport. I'll prep the O.R. HENRY Do you think she's infected? HELEN [ON PHONE] I won't know until I get her into surgery Henry but if the creature did lay spores... HENRY Yeah, I know, Doc. She's dead. EXT WAREHOUSE [Kate and Will have split up and Kate is on foot. Kate listens to Will over the walkie.] WILL I'm two blocks out, widening my perimeter. [Will is in the van speeding between the warehouses.] WILL Kate? Kate? Kate, talk to me. KATE I saw something heading down behind the hill warehouse. ALTERNATES BETWEEN INT SANCTUARY AND INT WAREHOUSE HELEN How's her pulse? HENRY It's rapid, but it's kind of weak. HELEN Do you think you could pack her wounds? HENRY Yeah sure; what do I do? HELEN Right, I'll talk you through it. You need to find gauze and forceps. HENRY Okay. HELEN And Henry, whatever you do, do not let her blood come in contact with your skin. HENRY Right. [Henry hears a vehicle pull up outside.] HENRY I think the big guy's here. EXT WAREHOUSE WILL Kate, are you getting close? [Kate rounds a corner and cautiously enters a dock over looking an area where crates are stacked. She spots an abnormal behind some crates.] KATE Easy there, Gumby; it's just little old me. [Will speeds around a corner as Kate descends down the loading dock stairs.] WILL Kate, give me an update! [The abnormal rises quickly hearing Kate’s walkie and charges her. Kate is forced to shoot at the abnormal repeatedly. Will enters where Kate is and parks the van between Kate and the abnormal. The abnormal falters but recovers quickly. Will gets out of van and shoots the abnormal with a stun gun; causing the abnormal to collapses to the ground unconscious. Will and Kate cautiously approach the abnormal and Kate nudges it with her foot. It doesn’t react.] WILL Four tranqs and a concussion stun to take him down. KATE Butt-ugly to boot. ALTERNATES BETWEEN INT WAREHOUSE AND INT SANCTUARY HENRY Yeah, big guy's got her now. They're on their way to you. Doc, she was so pale. HELEN I'll do everything I can. HENRY Oh, my God, Gerald! She was supposed to meet him at the airport. I got to tell him... HELEN Henry. We'll call him. I you need to stay there. Scan and clean the room. INT WAREHOUSE [Henry pulls the top off a case to reveal a fancy gadget. He presses some buttons then turns it on and goes to stand outside. The gadget spins and a blue light emanates from it in all directions.] EXT WAREHOUSE LOADING DOCK [Will closes the back door to the van.] KATE So lizard boy here releases toxic spores. WILL Yeah, Henry's been working with Rachel's team for about five years. Never heard of Jack releasing his spores even once; he's supposed to be tame. KATE Bad call. INT SANCTUARY O.R. [Helen and Biggie begin working on Rachel. Rachel is enclosed in plastic which has zipped segments. They are opened so Helen is able to reach her patient.] HELEN Do a c-spine, chest and abdomen. BIGFOOT Ready. HELEN Give her one gram ceph. Increasing oxygen to 40%, heart rate 98 and regular; pupils are equal and reactive to light. BIGFOOT Abdomen soft; localizes to pain. HELEN Kidneys? [Biggie turns to look at a monitor.] BIGFOOT Clear. HELEN Good. CBC, chem panel, and gasses are all within normal range; now to the wound. [Helen picks up some forceps and pulls away Rachel’s clothing from her wound.] HELEN Oh, good. This one looks clean. Let's hope they all are. [Biggie grasps the end of Rachel’s shirt and reveals the other wound.] BIGFOOT She's infected. HELEN Damn it, the spores are active. [Helen and Biggie quickly close the plastic covering.] HELEN We need to get her into quarantine before I can operate. Hopefully I can get them out before they multiply. [Biggie stops, looks directly at Helen and growls.] HELEN I have to try. INT WAREHOUSE [Henry is waiting outside the lab door. A blue light can be seen through window in the lab door. The light goes out and Henry goes back into the lab.] HENRY [ON WALKIE] All right, I'm finished with the holographic scan, and I'm moving to the eradicator. [Henry turns off the holographic scanner and moves to another gadget and turns it on.] HENRY All right buddy; time to go to work. [Henry once again leaves the lab.] EXT WAREHOUSE [Will pulls up next to the warehouse entrance to see a door wide open. Henry is standing outside the lab door.] WILL Dude, you left the door open. HENRY Yeah, I'm a little busy right now; just finishing the DNA flame-out. [Will starts to get out of van but stops when a police car speeds by.] WILL You hear that? [A red light can be seen through the window this time. As it goes out; Henry moves to the door.] HENRY All right, french fries are done; just bagging the goods now. WILL Okay, head for the back alley. We'll pick you up on the fly-by. HENRY Just need a little more time. WILL The cops are coming in the front door. HENRY I'm almost there. WILL Get out! HENRY Never enough time. WILL Get out now! [The policemen enter the lab but Henry is no longer there.] INT SANCTUARY O.R. [Rachel has been placed in a more permanent enclosure. Helen is removing spores as Biggie watches a monitor.] HELEN Was Will able to get a hold of Gerald? BIGFOOT On his way; upset. HELEN Of course he is. [Helen removes a spore and places it in a container. Biggie initiates another scan on Rachel.] BIGFOOT There are too many; dividing too quickly. [Helen looks over to the monitor which shows several red dots which divide creating more.] HELEN Just stay sharp. You have your medicine bag? BIGFOOT Yes. HELEN Let's hope we don't need it. INT SANCTUARY SHU [Will and Kate exit the elevator on the shu level pushing a gurney with the abnormal on it.] KATE Trying to domesticate one of these things, that's like putting C-4 through the Play-Doh Fun Factory. WILL I don't know its cutting-edge stuff. Gerald focuses on its biochemistry while Rachel studies its behavior. They make a good team. KATE What I've seen of Jack's behavior, he could still use some obedience training. WILL The last time I saw him with Rachel, he was pretty docile. She was even teaching him sign language. KATE Well hey, I'm no scientist but you teach a deadly abnormal how to talk and all you'll get is a deadly talking abnormal. INT SANCTUARY MAIN LAB [Henry types in some commands into his computer and then turns on the holographic scanner. A blue light emanates out and a holographic image of the lab is recreated in the blue light. Henry grabs some tape and begins outlining the image with the tape. Kate enters and waves her arm in front of the scanner.] KATE Oh is this the thing that scanned the room? HENRY Don't do that. KATE Need a hand? HENRY No, I'm good. I got a system. KATE I get it. You can't go to the crime scene so you bring the crime scene to you? HENRY Yeah, best we can. KATE Do the cops have one of these gizmos? HENRY They wish they did. KATE So then how'd you come up with it? HENRY Will and me. His specs, my program, my design; still a work in progress but it's the best we've got right now. KATE She a friend of yours? I mean, Magnus is on the job, so... HENRY Rachel and I worked together for about four years. She's been helping me to understand who I am, what I am. She wasn't afraid of it. KATE And the other guy is what, her husband? HENRY Yeah, he's like a brother to me. INT SANCTUARY HALLWAY [A man exits the elevator and rushes down the hall. Henry comes around a corner and approaches the man.] GERALD Where's Rachel, Henry? HENRY She's in the O.R. GERALD Is she... HENRY She's alive. GERALD Take me to her, please. HENRY Yeah. INT SANCTUARY O.R. BIGFOOT Blood pressure's falling. HELEN Give her a 500 bolus of saline. Last one in this wound. [Biggie adds the solution to Rachel’s IV and then moves to initiate another scan. Many red dots appear on the image. Biggie’s growl draws Helen’s attention to the monitor. She moves closer to get a better look.] HELEN Oh, dear God. The infestation's spreading. BIGFOOT We are too late. We can't save her. [Gerald and Henry are looking in behind the glass.] GERALD Dr. Magnus? No... Rachel... HELEN Gerald. I'm so sorry. INT SANCTUARY O.R. [Helen has joined Gerald and Henry in the observation room.] HELEN I'm putting Rachel into stasis. GERALD To die? HELEN To slow down the progression of the spores, give me time to work on a treatment. GERALD There is no treatment, you know that. Once the host becomes infected the spores regenerate until the host is... HELEN I'm not ready to go there, not yet. I'm going to fight for Rachel but I need your help. GERALD What can I do? HELEN I need your research on Pleskidarsus spore regeneration. I may be able to create a reagent. GERALD But the chemical th... that halts spore reproduction it's far too... HELEN It's too caustic for human tissue I know. I think I may be able to find a way to lessen the toxic side effects. [Gerald shakes his head no.] HELEN Gerald... I need your research. HENRY You can use my set-up. [Gerald looks at Rachel and nods.] GERALD Okay. Show me. HENRY Okay, come on. INT SANCTUARY MAIN LAB [Will and Kate look over the boxes which Henry has placed to represent the furniture in the warehouse lab.] WILL Henry's detailed scan of everything in the lab corresponds to bar codes on the cardboard. Now that we've recreated the scene we can hopefully figure out what happened. KATE That's amazing... in like a total geeky kind of way. WILL Wow, jealous much? KATE No. WILL Alright, so you be Rachel okay? KATE Okay. WILL So you enter here. Henry hears you say... KATE Oh, my God? WILL Correct. KATE Uh so I must see that you, Jack, are out of your enclosure. WILL Right, so I must have smashed, forced my way out before you entered. KATE I drop my cell phone. Do you rush at me? WILL No because the major blood spatters are here. KATE Oh right, right and the wounds are on the front of her body not the back. WILL So for some reason, you approach me? KATE No... No, the trajectory of the spatters... WILL Yeah, it doesn't match the wound pattern on Rachel's body. KATE Hmm... WILL Okay, uh, stand over me as if you're reaching for me. KATE Like this? WILL Yeah. What do you think? KATE Well you know it fits. WILL Okay, so he's down here. She's reaching for him. KATE Okay well the woman's either crazy or stupid. I mean monster is loose you move away from it. WILL Yeah, unless she couldn't believe that he would hurt her. But she ends up over here. Why? KATE Well, it attacks, she trips, slams into the drug cabinet. WILL Yeah and lands right here. KATE And then it finishes the attack and splits out the window. Seems straightforward... ish. WILL Yeah. I don't know. Nothing about this seems straightforward to me. INT SANCTUARY SHU [Henry is looking in on Jack who is in the corner of his cell kneeling down with his back to the window. He senses Henry’s presence and turns around.] HENRY She was so good to you. [Jack moves to other side of glass from Henry gesturing to his mouth. Henry signs back to Jack.] HENRY I don't care if you're hungry. Don't you realize what you did? You hurt Rachel, Jack. Yes, Rachel. You hurt her; very bad, bad Jack. Very bad, bad Jack! [Jack signs back to Henry.] HENRY Yeah. You got that right. [Henry leaves and Jack continues to sign franticly.] INT SANCTUARY O.R. [Helen and Biggie are standing next to Rachel who is still enclosed in protective barrier.] HELEN Once I receive Gerald's data I'll start working on the reagent. In any case, we'll have to extract spores from Jack. BIGFOOT How much time? HELEN Even in stasis the tissue already damaged by the spores will necrose. Her system won't be able to handle it for too much longer. BIGFOOT Too young. HELEN By far. BIGFOOT I'll collect the spores from Jack. INT SANCTUARY SHU [Jack is sleeping on the gurney in his cell as Biggie enters. Biggie sets a container on a nearby table and moves toward Jack to get the spore samples. Biggie is able to get the sample without Jack waking but as he places the syringe in the container; Jack wakes and starts to get up. Biggie restrains Jack until he calms. Jack relaxes and Biggie pats his arm and then collects the container and leaves the cell.] INT SANCTUARY HENRY’S ARRAY [Gerald is staring as if lost in thought in front of the computer when Henry steps in the doorway.] GERALD Uh, just give me a couple of minutes here. I'm... I'm downloading my files from my home network. HENRY You need anything? [Gerald turns to Henry and just stares.] HENRY Right. I'll just uh... Look um... GERALD I'm not blaming you. HENRY Yeah, I am. I should have been there. GERALD Henry... Not now, okay? I just, I can't. HENRY Okay, I'm sorry. GERALD She's everything to me. She's my life. She... [Clears throat] Tell Magnus all the data she needs will be on her private LAN in 10 minutes. HENRY Okay. GERALD Should give her a shot at God knows what. HENRY Gerald... GERALD Just... just go. INT SANCTUARY SHU [Gerald is standing outside the glass watching Jack pace his cell. Jack turns to see Gerald and walks up to glass in front of Gerald. Gerald raises a machine gun. Jack backs away slowly as Gerald opens fire. Jack collapses. Henry rushes in and wrestles the gun away from Gerald.] HENRY Stop! That's enough! GERALD Damned animal! HENRY What the hell, Ger? GERALD It killed her, Henry, it killed her! HENRY Hey, she has a chance. GERALD Nobody survives a Pleski attack. You know that and so do I. HENRY Ger, she has a chance. GERALD She's dead. HENRY Man... INT SANCTUARY HELEN’S LAB [Helen is studying a microscope.] WILL I'm guessing he took the weapon while he was working in Henry's lab. HELEN And the Pleski? WILL It took a couple of bullets but its skin is so tough, I don't think there should be any permanent damage. The big guy's with him now. HELEN What about Gerald? WILL He's a mess. Henry's with him. HELEN I should never have left him alone. WILL The guy works for you, I mean, there was no reason to think he was going to go that far. HELEN Still, it should never have happened. WILL Assassination attempts aside, how goes it? HELEN Well ironically, Gerald's research is proving to be quite helpful. Take a look at this. WILL Is this going to put me off my lunch? [Will moves to the microscope which Helen had indicated. She adds a solution to a Petri dish; smiling at Will’s comment.] HELEN Now, watch. WILL Huh, well, that works. HELEN We just have to administer the right amount, enough to kill the spores without harming Rachel. WILL Right, like chemo. HELEN But far more tricky to regulate. Have you figured out what happened in the attack? WILL No. Kate's got something she wants me to see. I'm heading to the mock-up lab now. [Will lingers looking at Helen.] HELEN I know that look. WILL Rachel taught Jack a form of sign language and I'm thinking of trying to communicate with him. Now, I know it's not a conventional way of gathering evidence and I know what you're going to say. That if you could teach a lion to speak you still wouldn't understand him... your dad's favorite expression. HELEN Because... we often make the egocentric mistake of believing that abnormals think the same way we do; that their worldview and logic patterns are similar. In most cases even with the most intelligent species they simply aren't. WILL I know. Their whole cognitive process is different. HELEN Yes. [Will grins.] HELEN I'm... I'm just saying bear that in mind when you have your... chat. WILL Okay. INT SANCTUARY HALLWAY [Henry is sitting in a chair while Gerald paces.] GERALD How could you just sit there? If that was your wife on that table... if the only person who really mattered to you was... I don't know where to put all this, Henry. It lives and she dies? You tell me what you'd do. HENRY Honestly, Gerald, I don't know what I'd do... GERALD You'd kill the damn thing! You'd go all werewolf and you would take care of business! HENRY Wanting something and doing something about it are two different things, Ger. GERALD Really? You've never done anything crazy in the moment? Something maybe you shouldn't have done? HENRY This isn't about me. And Magnus says... GERALD I want to go down there in case she... I won't make any more trouble. HENRY I can't leave you on your own, man. GERALD Well, then you find someone else to watch over me; just not you. INT SANCTUARY MOCK UP LAB [Will and Kate are walking through the mock up crime scene.] KATE Okay, tell me what you see from here. WILL Okay, Rachel enters; she sees the Pleski is loose. Now, there's a tranq gun right in front of her. KATE Right, she had a defense. WILL But she doesn't use it. Why? KATE I'm thinking... because of this. WILL Item 163, what's that? KATE A syringe. WILL Containing what? KATE I don't know, but my guess is she was going for it when Jack attacked. WILL Okay good, so she was trying to inject him with something. KATE Uh huh, not a sedative 'cause that's in the tranq gun which she passes on. WILL Okay, bing, bang, boom. Rachel enters, sees Jack is loose, ignores the tranq gun and heads straight for the drug cabinet. KATE She drops the syringe before she can use it and now the big question is... WILL What was in the syringe? KATE What? [Will was staring at something on the floor under the medicine cabinet.] WILL Well... It's just that I'm not totally buying the whole ready-to-go syringe theory. Item 73, what's that? KATE Medicine of some kind, I don't know I can't read the label. WILL Huh... KATE So whatever was in that vial... WILL Was what she was trying to inject Jack with. KATE Right... Okay, I will talk to Henry. See if he can generate a more detailed view of the 3-D scan. WILL All right, I'm going to go check on Gerald. [Will turns to walk out of lab.] KATE Hey, Will... WILL Yeah? KATE This is what you did before you came here, right? Like fancy detective work, CSI stuff? WILL Yeah...look, in the real world forensics is under-staffed, under-funded and backlogged to the nines. KATE Oh. Well, score one for the criminals, then. WILL Put it this way, if I had this tech to work with you'd have been behind bars years ago. [Will leaves.] KATE No, I wouldn't. INT SANCTUARY HENRY’S ARRAY [Henry is watching a video on his monitor. The video is of Rachel who is standing in front of Jack. Jack is in a glass enclosure.] VIDEO RACHEL A new sign is deemed acquired only when reported by three independent observers, namely myself, Gerald, and... [Henry’s upper body appears on the screen. He is apparently the one filming the video.] HENRY Uh me. Hi. [Henry ducks back behind camera.] RACHEL I'm trying to be serious here. HENRY Yes, you should be very serious. It's very serious, don't laugh. RACHEL I'm not! HENRY And don't smile. Now, you focus. Ready? Go. [Henry’s face shows on the screen.] HENRY This woman is clearly insane; do not believe a word that she says. [Henry goes back behind camera.] HENRY Okay, yeah, anytime. [A sound is heard and the camera turns to show the door opening and Gerald leaning on the wall holding a cupcake alight with candles.] RACHEL You remembered. GERALD Ha ha! Ta-da! Watch out, watch out... HENRY Dude, that is clearly not going to feed three people. GERALD Then you can eat the melty bits. RACHEL You're the best. GERALD Happy anniversary, baby. [Gerald kisses Rachel.] HENRY Oh, wow, awkward and that's on film. I'm going to be sick. GERALD Okay, make a wish, make a wish... [Rachel blows out the candles.] RACHEL Done. GERALD Yay! The energy... the Gods have blessed this union. [Kate walks into Henry’s array and sees the video Henry is watching.] KATE Wow... [Henry quickly shuts off the video.] KATE She’s beautiful. HENRY What do you want? KATE Need to ID something on the floor, sector 34, item 73. HENRY The label's hidden. KATE I know. Looks like Rachel was trying to inject the Pleski with something. Though why she didn't just tranq the sucker, I have no idea... HENRY Look, you don't know her, all right? Don't even try. KATE Dude, just trying to solve a case here, that's all. HENRY It's fine. I'll enhance the area and I'll focus on the sector. Just give me an hour. KATE Henry, I know she means a lot to you... HENRY Give me an hour. KATE Right. [Kate leaves Henry to his work.] INT SANCTUARY SHU [Will walks in and observes Jack huddled in the corner hugging a blanket. Jack turns and sees Will. He approaches the glass slowly. Will waves and signs to Jack.] WILL Hi. I'm... I'm Will. [Jack just stares at Will.] WILL Uh...I'm sorry, never mind. [Just as Will turns to leave Jack starts signing back.] WILL Are you hungry? You're hungry. But you have food, it's there. [Jack angrily knocks the food off the table and then signs to Will.] WILL Bad Jack? I'm sorry, I don't understand. I don't understand. [Discouraged and frustrated Jack returns to the corner.] INT SANCTUARY HENRY’S ARRAY [Henry and Kate are looking at the monitor on Henry’s computer as Will enters.] WILL Anything? KATE Still working on it; how was your chat with Jack? WILL Huh... Turns out he doesn't have much to say, except I think he feels bad about what happened which, isn’t very monster-like. HENRY I tried looking through the vial to the label on the other side. It didn't work. Look, if you look at that piece of glass right there, it kind of acts like a mirror, right? WILL Yeah. HENRY Well, if you focus on that sector, kick up the res, flip it around...Betamethasone. WILL Betamethasone? KATE What is that, some kind of sedative? WILL No, it's just a common immunosuppressant. KATE Are you kidding me? She went for that over a tranq gun? HENRY There's got to be a good reason. WILL Yeah, I'm betting there is. INT SANCTUARY O.R. [Helen is injecting a drug into Rachel’s IV when Will enters.] WILL Hey. HELEN I've given her 30 milligrams of the reagent. We'll see how she responds to the treatment. WILL We found something in Rachel's lab. I think she was trying to inject Jack with betamethasone. HELEN What? Are you certain? WILL She was going for it instead of the tranquilizers. Does that make any sense? HELEN Actually, it might. But it would suggest that Rachel knew that Jack's ACTH levels were too high. WILL How so? HELEN In Siberia, the Pleski's native habitat, there's a rare fungus Cordyceps Siberienses. Now when the Pleski's exposed to even small amounts it increases their ACTH levels. WILL Which over-stimulates the adrenals. HELEN Exactly, now Rachel's research was based on the premise that the cordyceps fungus was the sole reason that the Pleskidara are deadly; and that without its influence they're a gentle, intelligent species. It was a controversial theory even in the abnormal research community. WILL Okay so, wait. So if Jack was somehow exposed to the fungus, then... HELEN It would explain how he escaped from his enclosure. WILL And why it took so many tranquilizers to bring him down. But why would he be exposed in the first place? HELEN Could it have been a shipping container that was somehow contaminated? Knowing Gerald and Rachel, that doesn't make any sense. They'd be so careful to screen for that. WILL Well, I'll do a blood test, check the ACTH levels. HELEN I'll talk with Gerald. INT SANCTUARY HELEN’S OFFICE GERALD Are you crazy? Of course we don't keep corticeps in our lab or anything similar. HELEN There's a possibility that Rachel suspected that Jack had been exposed. GERALD Can I cut into your Matlock speech here for a second? And pardon me, okay but the Pleski attacked Rachel because of its nature not because it was on drugs! She wanted to believe it was tame but you can't take an instinctive predator and teach it to love people. HELEN You and Rachel must have had some very interesting discussions about this. GERALD What do you mean? HELEN Her work was spent trying to prove that the Pleskidara could be socialized and yet you, quite obviously, believe the opposite. GERALD I support her in her work. I just...don't let her know that I think it's completely useless. HELEN And yet you allowed her to continue working with a dangerous species? GERALD Come on, Magnus, you know Rachel all right, she's made up her mind about something that's, you know... HELEN She's a very able researcher. GERALD Yeah, I admire her passion, I do. HELEN But she spent more time with the creature than she did with you. GERALD Yeah, she did. I thought this... getaway would…uh....would help change things. Maybe if we spent a little more time together, I...But now... What if she dies? What happens? Another able researcher gets hired and we all continue on playing with Jack? Is that what happens? HELEN We're testing his blood for ACTH levels. If the results are negative...I'll lock him away for good. GERALD Of course you will. Excuse me. INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM [Helen and Biggie have moved Rachel to a normal bed.] BIGFOOT She's been stable for more than an hour. Good news? HELEN Possibly. GERALD She's out of quarantine? [Gerald and Henry move up to glass enclosure.] HELEN I don't want to create false hope but the rate of spore division has diminished significantly. GERALD You're certain? HELEN They're beginning to die. We believe she's no longer contagious. [Suddenly multiple alarms sound on the monitors.] HELEN She's flat-lined. There are toxins in her bloodstream. The treatment's killing her. INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM HELEN Second epi in; charging to 300. BIGFOOT Epi in. [Biggie has administered the drugs. Gerald moves to go around Henry but Henry prevents him.] HENRY No, let them work. HELEN Come on, fight! BIGFOOT Charged. HELEN Clear. Time. BIGFOOT Four minutes. HELEN I've given her epinephrine, atropine, shocked her... BIGFOOT Seven times. [Helen turns to Gerald.] GERALD No... HELEN We need an alternative. BIGFOOT Too risky. HELEN She's dead either way. [Biggie picks up his medicine bag and takes something out; placing it in Rachel’s mouth.] GERALD What are they giving her? [Biggie massages Rachel’s throat until she shallows. Rachel gasps.] GERALD Rachel! HELEN Hold on. Normal sinus. BIGFOOT Lucky. GERALD Thank God. HELEN I need blood, cardiac and liver panels. [Helen moves to glass to speak to Gerald.] HELEN The reagent's taking its toll on her system. We'll keep her monitored but I can't guarantee that the treatment won't kill her before it runs its course. GERALD I'd like to be with her. [Gerald turns to look at Henry and then back to Helen.] GERALD Alone. [Helen nods her accent.] INT SANCTUARY HALLWAY [Helen is standing leaning against the wall beside a door. Will and Kate come around a corner and approach Helen.] WILL How's Rachel? HELEN Alive for now. KATE You should see this. [Will hands a tablet to Helen.] WILL Jack's blood results; the ACTH levels are higher than normal dropping from a previous spike. I'm checking his food remains for traces of this Siberian fungus. HELEN Well, why his food? Rachel would be the most careful about that I should think. WILL Um... KATE The Pleski told him. WILL He kept making the sign for "eat". Look, I tried to think outside of my egocentric way of communicating but I'm wondering if Jack maybe somehow knew that his food was being poisoned. KATE Or it's just hungry. WILL He hasn't eaten anything since he got here. HELEN Let me know what you find. [Helen walks past Will.] WILL Magnus... [Helen turns back to Will.] HELEN It doesn't look good. INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM [Gerald is sitting next to Rachel holding her hand and massaging her head.] GERALD It's stupid. I was going to surprise you. This trip wasn't to Blackpool for a convention, it was uh... to Paris. A real honeymoon finally. This shouldn't have happened. It shouldn't have been... [Gerald looks up to see Henry watching outside the door. Henry enters.] GERALD Can I have a private moment with my wife, Henry? HENRY I know, Ger. I'm sorry. This is my fault. GERALD I can't spend two minutes with her, without you showing up. I can't take her to a movie because you two have already seen it. First it's coffee with Henry and then it's a dinner here and there. Pretty soon it's all about whether or not you're available. You know that she actually blushes when you walk into a room and you know it and you insult me every time, pretending that it wasn't happening. HENRY She's with you, Ger, not me. I never did anything. GERALD You don't have to, Henry, you are... you're everything that she wants me to be. INT SANCTUARY MOCK UP LAB [Will stands studying the room.] INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM GERALD But I took care of things. Something had to be done. INT SANCTUARY MOCK UP LAB [Will is still studying the room when Kate enters.] KATE Mystery of the amped-up lizard... solved. [Kate opens a laptop and shows Will.] WILL Damn. KATE Yeah. Last three feedings were rife with delicious Siberian fungus. INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM HENRY You did this. You made this happen? [Henry moves around bed and gets in Gerald’s face.] HENRY This is Rachel! GERALD You're such an idiot, Henry. INT SANCTUARY MOCK UP LAB WILL Only two people had access to his food supply. KATE So unless blondie was going for suicide by Pleski.... WILL Where's Gerald right now? INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM [Gerald turns away from Henry.] GERALD I wasn't trying to kill Rachel. [Gerald picks up a knife off a table and turns back to Henry.] GERALD I was trying to kill you. [Henry backs away.] HENRY Oh, man, don't. GERALD Come on, Henry. Let's see your real face, huh? HENRY No! [Gerald stabs Henry.] INT SANCTUARY ISOLATION ROOM HENRY No! GERALD It's alright buddy, let it come. [Gerald slashes at Henry’s arm.] HENRY No! Don't... [Henry starts to transform but stops it.] GERALD Come on Henry, turn! One of us is checking out Henry and if you stay human it'll be you! HENRY Don't do this. GERALD Come on! HELEN Gerald! [Helen enters the room holding a gun on Gerald.] HELEN That is enough! Drop it. GERALD Look at her. I don't want to live when she's gone. Oh, but you'd take care of that though wouldn't you, buddy boy? Huh? If I just mess you up just a little bit you'd take care of business. You'd take care of me, wouldn't you? HENRY Stop... GERALD Then you'd have to live with it! HELEN Gerald! Think logically. You do NOT want to take this action. GERALD Come on, freak! [Gerald slashes at Henry when suddenly the alarms sound again drawing everyone’s attention to Rachel. Helen moves to care for Rachel and Biggie goes for Gerald.] HELEN She's crashing again! [Biggie easily restrains Gerald as Helen administers a drug into Rachel’s IV.] HENRY Doc, is she? [The alarms stop and regular rhythm returns.] HELEN She's stabilizing. [Will and Kate enter.] WILL Are you okay? [Henry looks at Rachel and then tearfully replies to Will.] HENRY No. EXT SANCTUARY GROUNDS [Will is sitting on a bench near Rachel who is in a wheelchair.] RACHEL So...how does someone recover from something like this? WILL By not blaming yourself for what happened. RACHEL Our marriage wasn't working. I should have said something. I should have stopped myself. WILL From what, feeling things? I'm sure you tried at some point or another but that doesn't work. [Henry walks up.] RACHEL Hi HENRY I can come back. WILL No, no. Uh we'll... we'll talk later. [Will leaves and Henry moves to sit on bench.] RACHEL Hey, you. HENRY Hey. [Henry slowly sits down grimacing.] RACHEL Ow. HENRY Wow, you look terrible. Where the hell's your make-up bag? RACHEL Stop it. HENRY Yeah...you see that's the problem; I can't. You and I got too close Rachel and I went there willingly. RACHEL Because I gave you permission; I don't know why I... I think I was afraid to admit that I'd made a mistake with Gerald. I chose the wrong person. HENRY No, you're not in love with me, Rachel. I'm just the third wheel to keep you guys upright while you figured things out. I bought in too much. RACHEL You really don't think that's all you were to me? Henry... I am in love with you. [Rachel holds Henry’s hand.] HENRY Then why did you marry him? RACHEL Because he was the one who asked. Because you were always too scared to open up to me. Is it because of what you are? Did you think I wouldn't accept that? [Henry doesn’t answer and looks to the ground.] RACHEL Oh, my God... You don't love me. HENRY Rachel... we... can't be together. RACHEL Henry... HENRY Because Gerald's my friend, and... I'm so sorry. INT SANCTUARY HELEN’S OFFICE [Henry walks into Helen’s office and sits in a chair in front of her desk.] HENRY I know what you're going to say and you're totally right. It's all on me. HELEN Not all, but enough. I know you thought you were helping Rachel and her relationship with Gerald, but... HENRY I was just making it worse. I just wanted to be there for her. You know, be someone she could count on. Be a friend. HELEN But things changed. HENRY Yeah. HELEN That's usually when it's best to come clean. You can't let who you are keep you from getting close to people, Henry. [Henry stands up but hesitates.] HENRY Hey, Doc... Thank you for saving her. THE END
