She directed the Street Spin-off Coronation Street - The Feature Length Special and produced Coronation Street - After Hours also a spin-off, in Laurence Moody Although she planned a musical career, she was employed by Granada Television where after assisting the distinguished documentary filmmaker Denis Mitchell, she began to direct working on World in Action and Crown Court. She won the Best First Film Prize at the Sanremo Film Festival for her 1985 feature film The Assam Garden. Her other credits include Spender, Taggart, Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Cadfael and Judge John Deed. She is a former Chair of the "Directors' and Producers' Rights Society", now "Directors UK", and President of the "International Committee of Dramatic, Literary and Audio-Visual Authors".
