The character first appeared on the 22 August 1980, five years after the show initially started, and remained in the show until the 7 July 1995. He made re-appearances in 1996, 1997 and 2000, and returned full time on the 17 May 2003 and remained until the show ended on the 8 December 2007. The character's main storyline was his relationship with Maureen Granger, but he also had other storylines involving a custody battle, a new businness and its destruction, a mental breakdown, a feud with a local crime gang, getting framed for fraud and having an affair.
