Constructed on the island in 1985, it has two runways (R1, 4,500 feet; R2, 3,000 feet), the first of which is curved into an L-shape making it one of the hardest runways to land on in all of Floyd. In 2008, as part of the Fastlane project, the airport and the city announced that the runways, helipads and parking lots were being demolished and moved under the city on a floating metal base on the water. This action was taken to expand the amount of land available for development and to lengthen the runways for more international flights.
