Astier also stars as King Arthur and composes all the music for the show. The series takes place during the 5th century and uses modern language and humor to present a "realistic version" of the Arthurian Legend. In 2003 Astier wrote and directed a short film Dies irae that has the same basic format and plot structure. The film primarily featured the same cast as the tv show. Astier used the film to pitch the tv show to the M6 television network. M6 used to replace another successful tv series Camera Cafe. Interestingly, Kaamelott exceeded its predecessor's weekly viewership after only three weeks on air.
