The game marked the first time teams were allowed to name seven substitutes in Football League games, of which three were allowed to be used, and was also the Rovers debuts of loanee goalkeeper Fraser Forster, defender Carl Regan and midfielder Dominic Blizzard. Future Rovers striker Scott McGleish was named in the Orient starting eleven.
