| - Barter describes economic exchange unmediated by money. According to historian Peter Linebaugh, the working classes in 18th century London exchanged some goods, often the waste that custom permitted them to take from production, for other goods.
- Dinotopia's commerce is barter based. This undoubtedly came about because metal is precious on Dinotopia, and can't 'wasted' by being trapped in coinage. Bartering is a process in-which you trade something you have for something you want. This works best if you have something the person your trading with wants.
- Barter is one of the Secondary Skills that you can obtain in the Avernum Series. You can obtain it in Avernum 2 by completing the Slaying the Salamanders Quest, and speaking again to Tor Gunston.
- Barter is the first File:Commerce Research Icon.png Commerce Research available at the Library. It unlocks researching the second Commerce technology, Coinage. Researching Barter unlocks the Market and the Dock. It also increases the Commerce Limit for all resources by +30 (excluding Knowledge, which is not limited), from 70 to 100. Barter increases the Caravan Limit by +1, allowing you to create another trading route.
- The barter panel functions in a manner similar to a container panel. On the left side are the other player's offered items and the right side holds any item you wish to offer for trade. When you are happy with the items on both sides, press the "Offer" button. When an offer is made, the other player has two choices: he can accept the offer or refuse -- either by changing the items in his slots, or pressing the "Cancel" button. This system requires that both players agree to a trade before it can happen.
