| - True Were-worms were formidable monsters. Wingless, they resembled Cold-drakes, except that they were long and very slender and were usually reddish brown or green. Like Cold-drakes, they were powerful spell-casters; however, Were-worms concentrated on their ability to magically alter their form. As powerful shape-changers, they could elude, bewilder, surprise, terrify, or simply overwhelm their foes. A Were-worm could reduce or increase its size by as much as fifty percent of its mass, assuming any form it could actually see (or envision in detail) at the time it altered its shape.

Most Were-worms lived in the highlands of eastern Middle-earth. Their greatest concentration was in the Mountains of the Wind (Q. "OrosĂșli"; S. "Ered Gwaen") in southeastern Endor, but a few lived in the Red Mountains (Q. "Orocarni"; S. "Ered Ceren") to the north. They favored mist-shrouded lairs, which might account for the legends that sid Were-worms lived in the clouds. Oddly, Hobbit tales confused true Were-worms and Sand Drakes, for only the latter were found in real desert terrain.
