In May 1968, he and his wife Sonia attended an HPL concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco. With them were two Old Ones. The party watched HPL rehearse. The Old Ones enjoyed HPL's music. Phillips could only describe what he heard as "interesting". During the concert that evening, an iceberg which had broken off from the Ross Ice Shelf nearly a year earlier and had made its way to San Francisco deposited a swarm of shoggoths in the city. One made its way to the Fillmore, and decapitated the Old Ones and Phillips before succumbing to a napalm attack. Sonia Phillips escaped the Fillmore with the help of HPL.
