Tanuga IV appears in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode as the cloudy home planet of the Tanugans, who impose a harsh "guilty until proven innocent" system of criminal justice. Commander Riker was accused of murdering the Tanugan physicist Dr. Nel Apgar. The physicist was experimenting on converting Krieger waves and had hoped to sell his Krieger-wave converter to the enemies of the United Federation of Planets as a weapon. Of course the Federation's interest in the technology had been chiefly as a new power source.

- Tanuga IV was the inhabited fourth planet in the Tanuga system. This was the homeworld for the Tanugans, a highly advanced humanoid species. A lambda field generator, one integral part of Doctor Nel Apgar's work on Krieger waves (the other being the Krieger wave converter, located on the Tanuga IV research station in orbit of the planet), was located on Tanuga IV. Shortly before the destruction of the station, Manua Apgar and Tayna beamed down to the planet, saving them from certain death. The Tanugan security force, represented by Chief Investigator Krag, was operating from the planet.

In 2366, the USS Enterprise-D visited the planet to investigate Apgar's work. Riker was investigated for the destruction of the station, but after comparing the different accounts, it became clear he was not responsible. (TNG: "A Matter of Perspective" ) "TAN-ooh-guh" was the pronunciation for this planet from the script pronunciation guide. [1] According to Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 371) , Tanuga IV was a M-class planet.
