- Internet Protocol (IP) е протокол за комуникация, на който се основава Интернет. Разработен от д-р Винт Сърф и д-р Робърт Кан като част от проект на американското министерство на отбраната, IP се използва за пръв път през 1969 г. в ARPANET. Данните за преместване по мрежата се разделят на малки единици, наречени IP-пакети, които освен битовете на данните, която трябва да се предаде, съдържат адресa на подателя, адрес на получателя и други служебни данни като например:

| - The Internet Protocol is the principal communications protocol used for relaying datagrams (packets) across an internetwork using the Internet Protocol Suite. Responsible for routing packets across network boundaries, it is the primary protocol that establishes the Internet. IP is the primary protocol in the Internet Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite and has the task of delivering datagrams from the source host to the destination host solely based on their addresses. For this purpose, IP defines addressing methods and structures for datagram encapsulation. Historically, IP was the connectionless datagram service in the original Transmission Control Program introduced by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn in 1974, the other being the connection-oriented Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). The Internet Protocol Suite is therefore often referred to as TCP/IP. The first major version of IP, now referred to as Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) is the dominant protocol of the Internet, although the successor, Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is in active, growing deployment worldwide.

Данните за преместване по мрежата се разделят на малки единици, наречени IP-пакети, които освен битовете на данните, която трябва да се предаде, съдържат адресa на подателя, адрес на получателя и други служебни данни като например:
* номер на версия — 4 бита
* информация, дали пакетът е част от по-голямо количество данни, съответно:
* DF (Don't fragment) — 1 бит
* MF (More fragments) — 1 бит
* Fragment-Offset — 13 бита
* TTL — Time To Live или през колко инстанции на протокола може да премине даден пакет, преди да се счита за загубен — 8 бита
* идентификатор на ползващия транспортен протокол — 8 бита — и др. Понастоящем (2004) широко се използва версия 4 на протокола, при която адресите са 32-битови числа, т.е. с формат xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, където ххх е число между 0 и 255. Версия 4 носи със себе си редица ограничения, които ще бъдат преодоляни с навлизането на новата версия 6. Протоколът не гарантира сигурното пристигане на информацията и няма корекция на грешки. IP се използва от транспортни протоколи като TCP и UDP.
