Hogansburg Volunteer Fire Department formally began in 1954. In 1960 the HVFD built a new station in Hogansburg, New York. The Cornwall Island Fire Brigade became part of the department and it was renamed "Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department" to represent the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory as a whole.
