Gibson was the anchor for World News with Charles Gibson, the flagship evening newscast by the ABC News division, until his retirement in late 2009, when Diane Sawyer replaced him. A video montage sending him off into retirement on December 18, featured goodbyes from David Muir with Murray Monster and Abby Cadabby, as well as Reporter Kermit. In the book Before You Leap, Kermit talks of his friendship with Gibson and how Kermit's role as a reporter on Sesame Street helped the news anchor with his daughters. Unable to comprehend what their father did for a living, Gibson told his daughters, "I do what Kermit does on Sesame Street."
