However, the M1903 Springfield remained in service as a standard issue infantry rifle during World War II, since the U.S. entered the war without sufficient M1 rifles to arm all troops. It also remained in service as a sniper rifle during World War II, the Korean War and even in the early stages of the Vietnam War. It remains popular as a civilian firearm, historical collector's piece and as a military drill rifle.

- The M1903 Springfield is a rifle.
- It was officially adopted as a United States military service rifle on June 19th 1903, and saw service in World War I. It was officially replaced as the standard infantry rifle by the faster-firing, semi-automatic M1 Garand, starting in 1936. However, the M1903 Springfield remained in service as a sniper rifle during World War II, the Korean War, and the early stages of the Vietnam War. Despite being replaced by the M1 Garand, the Springfield M1903 remained the standard-issue rifle of the US Army and Marine Corps during WWII until sufficient numbers of M1 Garands were made available to US soldiers and Marines.

As a bolt-action rifle reach round had to be cycled manually. It was known to be favored by the United states marine corps during early World War 2 the marines turned down the M1 garand and remain using the Springfield. Later they adopted the new M1 because it had the capability of more firepower which was better suited for the Pacifics jungle warfare.
