When Rob Ferguson went bird-hunting in Guilford, Maine, he normally looked for ducks or geese on the water. On a few occasions he was hungry enough to shoot Coots but they took a long time to cook and were not tasty. Coot soup smelled especially nasty with possibly skunk smelling worse yet but Rob was not inclined to experiment.

Not getting mixed with foreigners is first duty of a Norfolk Coot (CC7). When Jim Wooddall (who was Norfolk like Tom) sees the notice about the casting-off of the Margoletta he thinks that the other people were probably to blame. Foreigners anyway are not pleasant folk .... those chaps can cover the place with paper before anybody give him away (CC12).
