| - Shadowfax is one of the cats who is waiting in Zoey Redbird's room as a sign that Professor Dragon Lankford is on their side and mentally rebelling against Kalona.
- This noble creature was the chief of the Mearas of Rohan at the time of King Théoden. At one time, Gandalf was attempting to rouse Théoden to an awareness of his danger from both Sauron and (possibly) from Saruman, but Théoden at that time still believed the evil councils of Gríma Wormtongue and hence did not heed Gandalf's words. He angrily bade the wizard to take any Horse he wished ifhe would leave as soon as possible. Greater still was the king's anger when he realized which Horse Gandalf had taken. Shadowfax served Gandalf well throughout the War of the Ring, withstanding all of the terrors of Mordor that they faced together and outrunning even the Fell Beasts, who were winged.

- Shadowfax was "the Lord of all horses". He was a descendant of Felaróf, of the race of the long-lived Mearas, the greatest horses of Middle-earth. Shadowfax was capable of comprehending human speech and was said to run faster than the wind. Originally belonging to the House of Eorl, Lord of Rohan, Shadowfax was too wild to be tamed by the Rohirrim. Eventually he was given to Gandalf the White by Théoden, the 17th king of Rohan. Shadowfax's coat is described as silvery-grey in daylight and hardly to be seen at night.
- Shadowfax is a Mearh stallion and Gandalf's mount in the Lord of the Rings. He is extremely fast and can be ridden without tack, as long as the rider is Gandalf. At the end of The Lord of the Rings, he travels with Gandalf into the West. Ignorant fanfic writers often make Shadowfax ridable by others beyond just Gandalf, or have Shadowfax sire another Mearh which is often intended to be a special mount and/or companion to a Mary Sue. Sometimes, they even have him put up with a saddle.
