When Robert Langdon was a sophomore at Princeton University, Peter gave a lecture there on semiotics and archetypal history which sparked in the young Langdon his passion for symbols. Peter's humility inspired Langdon to write him afterward and a gratifying friendship began; although he was only 12 years older than Langdon, he also became a father figure to him.
