Jacob Gaus was General Nathan Bedford Forrest's bugler. He was with Forrest at the Battle of Fort Pillow. After Forrest issued his demand that the garrison in the fort surrender, Gaus asked if he should sound the attack. Initially, Forrest ordered Gaus not to, still hoping that the fort would surrender. Gaus was given the order to blow a charge soon enough, as Major William Bradford refused to surrender.
