In extreme circumstances, a hold-parent might adopt a youngling if something happened to their parents. Lord Hethrir of the Empire Reborn pretended to be a hold-father to the Solo children when he kidnapped them in 14 ABY. The children were not fooled, however, realizing he was telling them lies.
