Real woolly rhinos, called Coeladonta by scientists, were large, hairy relatives of today's rhinoceroses that lived in Europe and Asia during the Ice Age, long after the extinction of the non-bird dinosaurs 65 million years ago. They reached about 4 metres in length. The horns of Coeladonta were likely used for defense against predators like sabre-toothed cats and early humans. It was a distant relative of woolly mammoths. Its extinction may have been caused by overhunting or climate change. The name Coeladonta means "hollow tooth".
