- Autocannon is a medium caliber (generally from 20 to 57 mm) weapon capable of rapid firing. In both Crysis and Crysis Warhead, autocannon ranges from the 20mm AAA automatic cannons to the 30mm automatic cannons of APCs.
- Although capable of generating a high rate of fire, autocannons overheat if used for sustained fire, and are limited by the amount of ammunition that can be carried by the weapons systems mounting them. Both the US 25 mm Bushmaster and the British 30 mm Rarden have relatively slow rates of fire so as not to use ammunition too fast. The rate of fire of a modern autocannon ranges from 90 rounds per minute (in the case of the British RARDEN), to 2,500 rounds per minute with the GIAT 30. Systems with multiple barrels can have rates of fire of over 10,000 rounds per minute, (the Russian GSh-6-23 for example). Such extremely high rates of fire are effectively employed by aircraft in air-to-air combat, where the target dwell time is short and weapons are typically operated in brief bursts.
- An autocannon was a rapid-fire projectile weapon that fired explosive shells. They were common armament of warships during the Diaspora of Man, forming the core of close-range combat and point defense, before laser and graser turrets began to replace them. (HHA6.2: ACTA)
- Autocannon shells once contained an explosive charge similar to that of a bolt round (only far larger) though the means of producing this charge has been lost to Imperial science and now the rounds fired by an Autocannon are less powerful than they once were. However, the Autocannon is still more than capable of eliminating heavily armoured infantry or light vehicles, and is employed by Imperial Guard fire support weapons teams due to their versatility and reliability. Though Autocannons are designed to be fired from a standard pattern bipod with a steel glacis, in extreme situations it is not unknown for some of the physically stronger troops to carry them into battle slung from a suspensor harness, though this "gung-ho" method of firing is unusual and not encouraged.

- Autocannons act much like cannons; they are a means of transportation for the Kirbys. If one Kirby gets in an autocannon, the rest of them will appear inside as well. When fired, the Kirbys form a tight ball that can plow through any star block, metal block, or enemy or it encounters (except Gondolus).

Surprisingly, the Autocannon is almost ignored as a weapon by the warriors of the Adeptus Astartes. While their superhuman physique and Power Armour-augmented strength allows a Space Marine to carry and fire an Autocannon with ease, the large majority of Loyalist Chapters favour either ranged weapons with a much higher rate of fire (like the Heavy Bolter or Assault Cannon), or ranged weapons packing more killing power with each individual shot (like the Lascannon or Multi-melta). As such, the Autocannon is a rarely fielded weapon for the Space Marines. However, the Chaos Space Marines who have thrown in their allegiance with the Ruinous Powers do make ample usage of the Autocannon, as it is a simple and sturdy weapon requiring very little of the heavy maintenance that most Chaos Space Marine warbands now lack the resources to execute.

When fired, the Kirbys form a tight ball that can plow through any star block, metal block, or enemy or it encounters (except Gondolus). Some autocannons bear no markings other than their distinctive yellow-orange ring of paint, and automatically fire once all the Kirbys get inside them. Other autocannons are painted to have a red arrow, and these cannons will not fire on their own. They usually (but not always) turn to aim different directions, and can be fired using a tap with the stylus. Some autocannons with arrows hang from the ceiling on springs, and sink in elevation if at least six Kirbys pile into one. One autocannon appears exclusively in Stage 2 of Dedede Resort. This autocannon counts the number of Kirbys the player has and is raised on a chain into a pinball-like machine. It fires one Kirby at a time, giving the player a maximum of ten shots. A bar determining the power of the shot raises and lowers, so the player can fire with whatever power he/she wants. The number of Kirbys left inside the autocannon is shown on the side.
