Finland's independence followed the February Revolution in Russia. It almost immediately found itself in crisis as Social-Democrats and Conservatives (backed by Germany) fought for dominance. Only an intervention by Allied troops (who wanted to prevent the country falling into German hands) saved the Republicans.
