The 493rd was a fighter squadron that operated as part of the United States Army Air Force during World War II. The 493rd was first formed on November 20, 1940 as the 56th Light Bombardment Squadron. Subsequently, the squadron was activated in January of 1941. In 1942, it was redesignated the 56th Bombardment Squadron and equipped for dive bombing operations. Once again the squadron was renamed and refitted as the 493rd Fighter-Bomber Squadron before finally becoming the 493rd Fighter Squadron in 1944. On November 7, 1945, the 493rd Squadron was deactivated. During the war, the 493rd operated a variety of aircraft ranging from the Douglas A-20 Havoc, to the Vultee Vengeance, to the most famous type used by the squadron, the P-47 Thunderbolt.
