In the USA, this certification is awarded by the National Certification Board For Diabetes Educators. Credentials for becoming a CDE are strict. The candidate must be a RN, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician or podiatrist with an unrestricted active license. They can also be a dietitian a masters of social work, or an exercise physiologist. There are some other masters level programs that are accepted as well. The person must have 2 years of working with people with diabetes, and have 1000 hours of educating documented. The person must be working as a diabetes educator. The person may then sit for the certification exam().
