Kerr started his National Hockey League career with the New York Islanders in 1984. He also played for the Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets. He retired after the 1993 season. He played junior for the Seattle Breakers and was chosen 84th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. Kerr turned pro in 1984-85 and split two seasons between the Islanders and the Springfield Indians. He became an Islanders regular in 1986. He lost his spot in 1990-91. Trades to the Detroit Red Wings and the Winnipeg Jets did not help and Kerr retired in 1993.
