Frank Heston loves guns. A lot. He loves them small. He loves them big. So it was no surprise to anyone who knew Heston that he joined the USCM. After basic and Infantry School, Heston pursued his MOS in becoming a Weapons Instructor. He served as a junior Special Weapons Instructor at SOI East for 2 years before he decided to transfer to a combat unit during the Arcturan War. When later describing the incident, the grateful Marine told his superiors that Heston used the M56 like a "bone saw". He was admonished for his activity by his CO, but the name stuck.

During an engagement in the Dehclor Sector, Heston's APC was hit with a MagMine booby trap. The resulting blast flipped the APC, killing 2 aboard and 1 Marine riding atop the vehicle. The APC landed on top of one of the mounted Marines outside the vehicle, pinning his leg. The squad tried to free the trapped Marine even as they fell under fire from the enemy ambush. Out of options and refusing to leave a man behind, Heston trained his M56 Smartgun on his trapped teammate's confined leg and severed it from knee with a short burst. He carried the wounded Marine out of the ambush, saving his life. When later describing the incident, the grateful Marine told his superiors that Heston used the M56 like a "bone saw". He was admonished for his activity by his CO, but the name stuck.
