On January 20, 1961 Jackie Kennedy became First Lady of the United States. As soon as the Kennedy's entered the white house things began to change, there were more social events in the white house and a major restoration project (1961 - 63). Jackie acted throughout Johns first term as a charmer for foreign leaders and dignitarys, and as a kind of private secretary. Jackie became immensly popular throughout 1961 - 1963 and was considered by many to be more popular than the President. In a newspaper poll in December 1963 Jackie was voted the most popular American Woman. Her immense popularity combined with the decision of Vice President Johnson not to run as Kennedys running mate in the 1964 election was what made her consider the vice Presidency as an option.
