To have one's name be thrice written, thrice burned was the ultimate form of dishonor in Romulan culture. Performed by the Romulan Senate, it meant that the subject was stripped of all honor and their name could never be spoken again. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally, The Romulan Way) After her failure to capture the USS Enterprise in 2267, Commander Di'on Charvon was subjected to this despite pleas on her behalf by her aunt, Commander Ael t'Rllaillieu. In 2410 Praetor Velal tr'Hrienteh ordered the former Empress Sela's name thrice written and thrice burned. (Bait and Switch: "Dynamic Entry")
