The Monarchists were the pro-Hapsburg group that opposed the socialist Popular Revolutionaries attempts to remove Emperor Maximilian III from the Mexican throne during the Mexican Civil War in the early 1920s. The Monarchists were enthusiastically supported by the Confederate States. Volunteers from the Freedom Party participated directly in the Civil War. The Popular Revolutionaries, on the other hand, were barely supported by the United States. By the middle of the decade, the Popular Revolutionaries had been defeated, and Maximilian's throne was safe, a fact the CS never let him nor his successor forget.
