The human skeleton can be broken up into two separate categories: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The appendicular skeleton consists of 126 bones of the limbs, the pelvic girdle and the shoulder girdle. The word appendicular refers to an appendage or anything attached to a major part of the body, such as the upper and lower extremities.
