Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry (15 June 1911 - 21 March 1997) was a railway enthusiast who is most well-known for creating The Railway Series and its most popular character, Thomas the Tank Engine. He sometimes appeared in his stories as the Thin Clergyman.
