Dirmer, a male Gelfling of the Namopo Valley, angrily protests the ideas of the Gelflings waging war against the Garthim in the first volume of Legends of the Dark Crystal. He shouts at Lahr stating that the idea of weapons and killing is "sick" and "obscene". He declares that violence is not the way of the Gelflings. Even in volume two after the Gelflings successfully defended themselves against the Garthim he still laments sadly:
