They were selected to battle each other during the preliminary rounds of the chūnin exams by pure coincidence. Though Neji (and others) told Hinata to forfeit if it came to this, Hinata wanted to prove that she had changed even a little and decided fight Neji. The fight almost got out of hand due to Neji's resentment of the Main House because of the death of his father.
