The palace symbolized the preeminence of French power and architecture in Europe and the triumph of royal authority over the French nobility. The architects were André Le Nôtre, Louis Le Vau, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Charles Le Brun, Robert de Cotte, and Ange-Jacques Gabriel.
