What Holds Us Down is a short story in Still Flying by Jane Espenson, that takes place just before the events of the the movie. It begins with Wash and Kaylee in a junkyard looking for replacement parts for the ship, and have apparently been wounded and are resting. As they are laying there, Kaylee begins to talk to Wash about his marriage with Zoë.
