Details: In December 1984, 16 year old Wendy Radcliffe was traveling through California with her grandmother, Bernice Gardner, whom she had a close and special bond with, when their car overheated. They stopped across the street from a restaurant in Modesto where Wendy called her mother from a pay phone, telling her that she and Bernice would be staying the night there. Wendy then ran across the street through the traffic while Bernice waited, and when the traffic appeared to have let up, she crossed the street, but while doing so was tragically struck by a car. Wendy ran to the restaurant and pleaded for help and when she went back she was pushed away from her grandmother because the people around Bernice assumed she was a bystander.
