He played junior for the Hamilton Fincups and the St. Catharines Fincups. In 1976 he won the Memorial Cup with Hamilton, setting a Cup record with 6 points in one game. He also was on Canada's team at the 1977 World Junior Championship. The Colorado Rockies selected him 126th overall in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft. In 1977-78 he was able to score 12 goals in just 37 games with the Rockies, but his total dipped to just five the next season.
