Formerly a British colony, the Cape "Colony" achieved full independence with the passage of the Statute of Westminster by the British Parliament in 1931. The Cape is a member of the British Commonwealth and has retained the British Monarch (currently Queen Elizabeth II) as its head of state. The Queen is represented by the Governor General in the Cape, who executes the Queen's largely ceremonial roles. The Cape Colonial Government, as it is known, is led by the Prime Minister.
